Truck Scale Installation in California, Done Right the First Time

I’ve watched a lot of truck scale projects over the years, and the ones that go wrong almost never fail because of the scale. They fail because the foundation was rushed, the drainage was an afterthought, or nobody planned how the site would keep weighing trucks while the old scale came out.

That’s why our truck scale installation in California starts long before the crane shows up. We look at your soil, your traffic, your longest trucks and your deadline, then we install, test and certify a scale that will hold its accuracy for years. New scale on a new site, a replacement on the foundation you already have, or a scale moved to another yard: one LSI team handles it from start to finish.

Quick answer: Replacing a steel-deck scale on a sound existing foundation typically takes about a day on site. A new steel-deck scale with a new above-ground foundation takes about a week of work, plus concrete cure time (about 14 days). Every scale is tested with certified test weights and placed in service under California rules before it weighs a single paid load.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Truck Scale

Cracked and settling concrete foundation under a truck scale, a common sign the scale needs replacement
Cracked or settling foundations pull a scale out of calibration.

A scale overhaul or repair can add years to a scale, but these signs usually mean replacement is the smarter spend:

  • It keeps failing calibration, or drifts again soon after being adjusted.
  • The foundation is cracked, settling or holding water.
  • The pit floods every winter and needs constant pumping and cleaning.
  • Corrosion has reached the main beams, not just the deck surface.
  • Parts for your analog load cells or old indicator are hard to get.
  • The deck is too short for the trucks you run today.
  • Repair bills keep coming. If you’re calling for emergency truck scale repair more than once a season, compare the cost of a new scale.

Our Truck Scale Installation Process, Step by Step

Nine-step truck scale installation process from site survey and foundation to certified testing and county sealer
Our nine-step installation process.
  1. Site survey and needs review. We measure the site, check access for the crane and test truck, and note your longest vehicles, heaviest axles and daily traffic.
  2. Scale and foundation selection. Steel or concrete deck, length, capacity, and the foundation type your soil and drainage allow.
  3. Engineering, drawings and permits. The foundation is built to the scale manufacturer’s certified drawing. We flag any local permits your site needs.
  4. Foundation construction and cure. Forming, rebar, pouring and curing. We don’t set a scale on green concrete.
  5. Delivery, crane set and assembly. Modules are lifted into place, aligned and connected.
  6. Electrical, indicator and data. Load cells, junction boxes, surge protection, the indicator and any printer, remote display or software.
  7. Testing with certified test weights. We test across the deck to confirm accuracy before anyone pays by weight.
  8. Placed in service and county sealer. The placed-in-service report goes to your county sealer, who inspects and seals the scale.
  9. Handover. Operator training, records, and a preventive maintenance plan to keep it accurate.

How Long Does Truck Scale Installation Take?

On-site time depends mostly on two things: whether you need new concrete, and whether the deck is steel or concrete. These are typical industry timelines; we’ll give you a firm schedule after the site survey.

ProjectTypical on-site timeWhat adds time
Replace a steel-deck scale on a sound existing foundationAbout 1 dayRemoving the old deck, foundation repairs, crane access
New above-ground (pitless) foundation2–3 days to form and pourGrading, drainage, soil problems
New pit foundation4–5 days to form and pourExcavation depth, groundwater, sump and drainage
Concrete cure before setting the scaleAbout 14 daysWeather; we never set a scale on green concrete
New steel-deck scale and foundation, total workAbout 1 week of work, plus cureSite prep, power and conduit, scale-house work
Concrete-deck scaleAbout 3 weeks or moreThe deck itself is poured on site and must cure too
Chart of truck scale installation timelines: one-day replacement, pitless and pit foundations, concrete cure and concrete decks
Typical installation timelines by project type.

The hidden schedule risks are usually power, conduit, permits and who is responsible for each. We sort those out in the site survey, not on installation day.

Choosing the Right Foundation for Your California Site

The foundation decides how long your scale stays accurate. It has to carry the load evenly, drain well and match the manufacturer’s certified drawing exactly; a foundation that shifts will pull the scale out of calibration.

Above-Ground (Pitless) Foundations

The scale sits above grade on concrete piers or a slab, with ramps on each end. Above-ground foundations cost less to build, are easier to clean and inspect, and stay dry. They need room: about 10 ft of flat, level approach plus ramps of roughly 25 ft at each end, per Rice Lake’s foundation guidelines. This is the most common choice on California sites with space.

Pit Foundations

The deck sits flush with the ground in a concrete pit, usually 2 to 6 ft deep. Pits save space and need no ramps, which suits tight yards. But they cost more to build, need drainage or a sump pump, and must be cleaned regularly. Standing water in a pit is one of the most common causes of corrosion and calibration problems we see.

Pier and Slab Foundations

Pier foundations put deep concrete columns under the heaviest load points; floating (beam) slabs pour one continuous slab along the scale. Both depend on soil bearing capacity, so a soil check comes first.

DrainageNatural runoffNeeds drains or a sump pump

California Site Factors We Check

  • Groundwater: parts of the Central Valley have a high water table, which can rule out a pit or require serious drainage.
  • Soil: clay and fill soils move; we check bearing capacity before choosing piers or a slab.
  • Runoff: winter storms in Northern California and monsoon rain in Arizona both test drainage.
  • Heat: summer heat in the valley and desert is hard on electronics; we plan shade and surge protection.
  • Access: room for the crane, delivery trucks and a certified test-weight truck.

Steel Deck or Concrete Deck?

Steel decks arrive ready to set, install in about a day and usually cost less upfront. Concrete decks use a steel frame filled with concrete on site, so they take longer and need cure time, but give a heavy, durable driving surface that many quarries and high-traffic sites prefer. California Certification: Making Your New Scale Legal for Trade

Five steps to make a new truck scale legal for trade in California: install, test, placed-in-service report, county seal, weigh
From installation to legal-for-trade weighing.

A truck scale isn’t ready for paid weighing just because it’s bolted down. California has a clear process, and this is where an experienced installer saves you time.

Registered Service Agencies and Licensed Technicians

In California, companies that install or repair commercial weighing devices for pay must be registered with the CDFA Division of Measurement Standards as a Registered Service Agency, and their technicians must hold a service agent license (CDFA Registered Service Agency guide). Ask any installer for theirs.

Placed-in-Service Report Within 24 Hours

Once a scale is tested and found correct, the service agency notifies the county sealer in writing within 24 hours, using a placed-in-service report. We handle that paperwork for you.

County Sealer Inspection and Registration

The county sealer inspects and seals the scale and registers it as a commercial device. Counties charge a yearly device fee; see our truck scale cost guide for the current maximums.

NTEP Components and Certified Test Weights

Scales and indicators used for trade must carry an NTEP Certificate of Conformance and meet NIST Handbook 44 (NIST Handbook 44). Testing must use test weights with a current certificate of accuracy.

Weighmaster License if You Sell by Weight

If your business charges or pays by weight, you’ll also need a weighmaster license. If you plan to automate the scale, California law limits fully unattended certificates to construction materials; our unattended truck scale systems guide explains the rules.

Keep Weighing During Your Replacement

The biggest hidden cost of a new scale is the time without one. During foundation work and cure time, a portable truck scale rental keeps trucks moving and tickets legal. For quick axle checks, axle scales can bridge the gap too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does truck scale installation take?

Replacing a steel-deck scale on a sound existing foundation typically takes about a day. A new above-ground foundation takes 2–3 days to pour plus about 14 days to cure before the scale is set. Concrete-deck scales take about three weeks or more.

Can you install a new truck scale on my old foundation?

Often, yes. If the foundation is level, sound and matches the new scale's certified drawing, replacing only the weighbridge is the fastest, lowest-cost option. We inspect it during the site survey.

Pit or pitless: which is better?

Above-ground (pitless) foundations cost less, drain naturally and are easier to clean. Pits save space and need no ramps but require drainage and more maintenance. Sites with room usually choose pitless.

Who certifies a new truck scale in California?

A CDFA Registered Service Agency tests the scale with certified weights and files a placed-in-service report with the county sealer within 24 hours. The county sealer then inspects, seals and registers the scale.

Do I need a permit to install a truck scale?

It depends on your city or county. Foundation and electrical work may need local permits, and the scale itself must be registered with the county as a commercial device. We flag local requirements during the site survey.

Can you move my truck scale to a new location?

Yes. We dismantle, transport, set and recertify scales on a new foundation.

How do I keep weighing while my scale is replaced?

Rent a portable truck scale for the foundation and cure period, or use axle scales for short gaps.

How much does truck scale installation cost?

It depends mostly on the foundation, deck type and length. Our truck scale cost guide breaks down published 2026 price ranges, and we provide itemized quotes after a site survey.
