The term “DOT compliant“ gets thrown around a lot. But what does it actually mean when you’re renting a portable truck scale?
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sets baseline weight limits for Interstate highways. Every driver and fleet operator needs to know the three key numbers: 80,000 pounds is the maximum gross vehicle weight for a 5-axle combination on Interstate highways. Single axle limits are typically 20,000 pounds, and tandem axles are 34,000 pounds.
These limits aren’t suggestions they’re federal law. Exceeding them can result in significant fines, safety violations, and increased liability.
For commercial operations selling by weight in the USA, your scale must meet specific standards to be considered legal for trade. This means the scale must be NTEP-certified and comply with NIST Handbook 44 standards.
NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program) certification ensures the scale has been tested and approved for commercial use. NIST Handbook 44 provides the technical specifications, tolerances, and requirements for commercial weighing devices.
Critical distinction: Non-legal-for-trade equipment can serve internal checks but cannot be the basis for customer billing when selling aggregate, grain, scrap, fuel, or other materials by weight.
California has its own set of requirements. In California, commercially used scales and meters must be legal for trade. A legal-for-trade device must generally have a Certificate of Approval issued by the California Type Evaluation Program (CTEP) or a Certificate of Conformance from NTEP.
Before any new type of weighing or measuring device can be sold or used for commercial purposes in California, it must be evaluated and approved by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Division of Measurement Standards (DMS).
Additionally, persons that sell, rent, install, service, or repair commercial weighing and measuring devices are required to be licensed with the Division of Measurement Standards.
According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) policy, portable scales must be accurate within two percent of true weight. HAENNI portable scales must be certified to within one percent of true weight.
For enforcement purposes, when using portable scales (wheel-load weighers), a scale allowance factor may be applied. The current accuracy of such scales is generally within 2 or 3 percent of actual weight, but in no case shall an allowance in excess of 5 percent be applied.
Any device used to weigh or measure products or services for direct sale must be an approved type and annually registered with the County Department of Weights and Measures. Scales and meters used commercially must be inspected and registered before being placed in service.
