I’ve been out in the field in 110-degree Fresno heat. I’ve worked on scales in Arizona’s dust storms. I’ve seen what winter rain does to load cells. And I can tell you with absolute certainty – if you’re not calibrating your truck scale based on the season, you’re asking for trouble.

☀️ Summer (June – September)

Here’s what happens in summer: metal expands. Your scale’s load cells, the steel platform, the junction boxes – everything gets bigger in the heat. NIST Handbook 44 Compliance

All commercial weighing devices must comply with NIST Handbook 44 – the bible of weights and measures specifications, tolerances, and technical requirements. This handbook is the foundation of every state’s weights and measures program, and California follows it to the letter.

Weighmaster Requirements

The $750,000 Lesson – A Real Case Study

The Case of Alco Iron & Metal Company

I want to tell you about a case that still makes the rounds in our industry. It’s the cautionary tale we share with every new client who thinks calibration is optional.

The Case: On March 4, 2015, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office filed a case against Alco Iron & Metal Company, a California corporation, for knowingly issuing false weight certificates and failing to maintain commercial weighing devices in compliance with California law.

The Violations: The company violated multiple sections of the California Business and Professions Code. They were under-reporting the weight of recycled aluminum on their industrial truck scale – cheating their customers out of money.

The Investigation: The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Division of Measurement Standards (CDFA DMS) worked alongside Alameda County investigators on this case.

The Settlement: Total settlement: $750,000. Civil penalties: $350,000. Agency costs: $350,000.

The Lesson: California law states that if a difference from the original certified weight is discovered as the result of fraud, carelessness, or faulty apparatus, the cost of verification shall be borne by the weighmaster responsible for the erroneous certificate.
